Love of language for pupils at Glodwick school

Alexandra Park Junior School in Glodwick has been working to broaden pupils' knowledge of words by running a vocabulary parade for the second successive year.

It's usually held during Book Week however, due to the pandemic, the event was postponed to later in the year.

The celebration of vocabulary showcases creativity in thinking about how they can show each word. The children are encouraged to make their own costumes by using recycled materials or to come in clothes they already have rather than buying costumes.

In line with Covid-19 restrictions, this year's parade took place in the park rather than in the school hall, giving everyone a chance to see the amazing costumes the children created.

Mrs Seabright (Headteacher), Mrs Griffin (Deputy Headteacher) and Mrs Lynch (Admin Assistant) had the difficult challenge of choosing winners from each class.

Jenny Seabright, head teacher at the Brook Lane school, said: "Thank you to children and their families for getting involved in the event. The event promotes a love of language and helps children learn some very unusual and new words."

Samantha Nicholson-Hickling, PSHE leader and Year 5 teacher, said: "It's amazing to see all our children getting involved and being so creative. There is no limit to their creativity and it has been wonderful to see them applying vocabulary they have learnt in school as well as new interest words they have learnt outside of school.

"It really shows how much our children value reading and vocabulary as they rise to the challenge of showing off their knowledge with ease."
