Light Up a Life service raises thousands for Oldham hospice

The second virtual Light Up a Life service held by an Oldham hospice has raised more than £25,000.

Dr Kershaw's Hospice said the service on Sunday 5 December received "incredible support" from the community and beyond from those who wanted to make a dedication to remember loved ones, whilst supporting the Royton-based hospice.

Each year Dr Kershaw’s Light Up a Life service gives people the opportunity during the festive period to remember their loved ones, no matter what their faith, culture or connection to the hospice is.

It was unable to be held physically again this year due to existing Covid-19 measures at the hospice but, like last year, it took place virtually.

Dr Kershaw's has now confirmed that more than £25,000 was raised in donations made in memory of loved ones, which will enable the hospice to provide dedicated care and support for a number of families across the borough of Oldham when they need it the most.

Over 2,300 households tuned in to the virtual service on the hospice's Facebook page and YouTube channel, while over 1,200 dedications were made to loved ones.

Those who made a dedication had a light lit in memory of their loved ones on the hospice’s dedication tree and have a special place in their online Book of Remembrance as well as on-screen during the virtual service.

Grace Carr, who organised the hospice's Light Up a Life service, added: “Thank you to the community for supporting Light Up a Life, by taking part in the virtual service and by making a dedication for your loved ones.

"The money raised from our Light Up a Life appeal each year, ensures that we can continue to support patients and their families within our community. We couldn’t be more grateful to each person who has taken the time to make a dedication, and are overwhelmed by the support that Light Up a Life has once again received this year."
