Latics secure first point of the season

EFL League Two: Oldham Athletic 0-0 Exeter City

Oldham Athletic claimed their first point of the season after a goalless stalemate with Exeter City at Boundary Park.

The visitors had the first chance of the game through Dylan Fage, but his effort from outside the box flew over the bar.

The Grecians continued to apply the pressure and almost broke the deadlock a few minutes later.

Jayden Richardson’s cross into the box made its way to Lee Martin, but his effort was deflected just wide of the target.

Martin came close again, this time beating Mohamad Sylla before dragging his shot wide again.

Having absorbed the pressure, Latics almost went ahead through Gevaro Nepomuceno, but his shot from outside the box went just wide of Lewis Ward’s goal.

Johan Branger-Engone had a golden opportunity to put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, but he directed his headed effort in the six yard box wide of the target.

Exeter applied the pressure in the second half and came close on a number of occasions, although it was Oldham who thought they had taken the lead in the 78th minute.

Tom Hamer’s powerful effort inside the box was blocked on the line and cleared to safety.

In the 94th minute, it looked as if Exeter had stolen the three points when Jay headed home from close range.

However, the linesman ruled it out for offside and Latics held out for their first point of the season.

l Oldham are hosting an open training session at Boundary Park on Thursday from 10.30am until midday.

l Laurent Banide’s side return to action this weekend with a trip to Cambridge United.

The Us are currently third in the table, having won two and drawn two of their opening four games.

Colin Calderwood’s side beat 10-man Scunthorpe United 3-2 on Tuesday.

Harvey Knibbs and a Paul Lewis brace secured the points.
