The annual drop-in event is taking place this Saturday May 18.

Oldham Library is hosting the ninth Health Awareness Day for local residents on Saturday, May 18.

The annual drop-in event, which aims to raise awareness of common health conditions and how to stay as healthy as possible, is organised by volunteers from Sathya Sai International Organisation in partnership with Oldham Council, Positive Steps and NHS Oldham.

Visitors will be entitled to free health checks by professionals including; blood pressure checks, eye checks, diabetes risk assessment, dental/oral health advice, and weight assessment and management.

A range of partners from the Council, NHS and community sector will be at the Library providing health information and advice covering topics such as healthy eating and being active, complementary therapies, GP and pharmacy advice, volunteering activities and information and support for older people.

Families can also enjoy a treasure trail around the children’s library and join in with activities such as Lego, colouring and activity sheets and games in the creator space.

Cllr Zahid Chauhan, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said “We are looking forward to welcoming residents to the library where they can get a free health check and learn from a range of professionals who will be on hand to show them simple measures to improve their health and wellbeing.

“The fact that we are celebrating our ninth Health Awareness Day shows how important the event has become on our annual calendar.

“Our thanks go to the volunteers from Sathya Sai organisation, our staff and partners for organising such a valuable event.”

Bharat Sisodia, Health Awareness Day Coordinator, added: “It is wonderful to see how well this event is being received by the community, attracting hundreds of extra visitors to Oldham Library on a Saturday.

“It is not possible to host such an unique event without the selfless dedication of our volunteers and support from Oldham Council.

“It is very satisfying for all of us when we receive feedback from so many individuals of their experience and how much they have benefited by visiting these events. Our thanks go to everyone involved with this highly commendable project.”

Drop-in to Oldham’s Health Awareness Day between 10am to 3.30pm at Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre, Cultural Quarter, Greaves Street, Oldham, OL1 1AL.
