Iconic Diggle clock tower is staying put

Oldham Council says there are no plans to demolish the iconic clock tower building on the site of the new multi-million pound Saddleworth School at Diggle.

The moves comes after concerns from locals that the tower could be taken down now work has begun.

The site is being cleared in preparation for the new school which will house up to 1,500 students.

But a spokesperson for the council said in a statement: "There are no plans for the clock tower building to come down.

"The future use of the clock tower building is under consideration, none of which have yet been decided on.

"We are aware of the Council’s obligations regarding the listed building, in particular working to the long term future of the building.

"At this point, we are working with the current building owners to agree any remedial works identified to prevent further deterioration."
