Dramatic rescue after clough fall in Greenfield

Oldham's heroes of the hills spearheaded a major rescue on Sunday after a man had fallen down vertical banking next to a waterfall at Birchen Clough, near Dovestones, Greenfield.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team received a request from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust asking them for assistance.

North West Air Ambulance Charity were tasked, arriving shortly before some of mountain rescue dog handlers, who had been training nearby.

After assessing the casualty, who had sustained multiple injuries, and due to the distance fallen, coupled with the technical extrication, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter was requested as their winching capability were required.

OMRT leader Rob Tortoishell said: "The casualty was packaged in to our vacuum mattress and placed onto the stretcher. He was then winched into the coastguard helicopter, before being transferred into the land ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

"We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery."

Twenty OMRT personnel were involved for just short of three hours.
