Council to look at ways of alleviating cemetery flooding

The council say it is investigating how to prevent areas in a number of Oldham's cemeteries from flooding.

Recent heavy rainfall, Storm Christophe and melting snow has caused issues in parts of Chadderton and Crompton Cemeteries.

Oldham Council say its staff are currently looking to see if any physical works to the sites can be carried out to help stop any problems in the future.

However, initial surveys show the flooding was due to the sheer volume and build-up of water the borough has experienced during the recent bad weather.

Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Culture, said: “We are aware of the flooding issues in areas of our cemeteries and would like to apologise to residents if any distress has been caused.

“Our staff are currently looking at the options available to us and once these are clear, where it is practical, we’ll look to carry out work to help alleviate the problems.”

People who see any issues at Oldham cemeteries are being asked to report them by emailing env.cemeteries@oldham.gov.uk or calling 0161 681 1312.
