Oldham Council has said it removed almost 25 tons of rubbish off the streets of Alexandra during the first month of its 'Don't Trash Oldham' campaign.
Council staff cleared fly-tipping, dumped rubbish and litter from 114 roads and 80 alleyways, as well as removing weeds and any shrubs they found.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “This is a great effort from our teams and I know our residents really appreciate what they are doing.
“That’s a huge amount of waste that has been cleaned up and it will make a big difference to the people who live in Alexandra. Nobody wants to live in a tip.
“It’s a shame we have to tackle waste on this scale, but this campaign shows we are serious about clearing up the borough and prioritising clean streets and neighbourhoods.”
The council say it's investing an extra £1.27 million – on top of what is already spent on cleaning up fly-tipping, waste and litter – for the borough-wide campaign.
The clean-up teams are currently cleaning up Chadderton Central and Chadderton North.
The authority says the clean-ups have gone down well so far, with residents welcoming staff and even bringing out refreshments for them.
Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The first month in Alexandra went really well. We'e received some really positive feedback for what we are doing.
“We know we can’t stop fly-tipping and littering overnight but we are doing our bit and we will look to take action against those who think they can get away with.
“We want more people to support the campaign – it can be anything from remembering to lock your alleygates to organising a litter pick in your neighbourhood. If we work together then we can make improvements.”
The council say it is also creating new jobs as part of the campaign - including more street cleaners and enforcement staff to ensure more people are fined and prosecuted.
