Blue Coat 'absolutely delighted' with school's GCSE results

GCSE results have risen nationally this year and Blue Coat School in Oldham is no exception.

The Egerton Street school says 89 per cent of all students have achieved a grade 9 to 4 in English and Maths, while 38 per cent of all grades were between 9 and 7.

The school said in a statement: "Students worked hard in the months leading up to lockdown, they gained new knowledge and skills, they met new friends and consolidated old relationships. Many of our students were bitterly disappointed not get the chance to take the exams, but the grades they have received were a recognition of their commitment, effort and ability during their time at Blue Coat.

"Now students have their grades they are ready to embark on the next stage of learning. For many of our students this means staying on at Blue Coat sixth form."

Josh Harvey, from central Oldham, (pictured below with Mr Tony Keane, Director of Learning for Year 11) is looking forward to continuing his studies in Mathematics and Physics as he seeks a route into one of England’s top universities.

Talented musician Sophie Norman, who lives in Chadderton, (pictured below with her mum and dad) plays the flute and is a valued member of the Oldham Youth Orchestra and Oldham Youth Wind Band. She's looking forward to continuing her studies.

Hannah Diamond, from Diggle, (pictured below with her family) has managed to combine playing Netball for England alongside her studies. Hannah will continue with both her Netball and education at Blue Coat next year.

Rebecca Mellor, from Royton, (pictured below with her mum) is looking forward to studying at Blue Coat Sixth Form - where she will continue to study her favourite subject, which is history.

'We're incredibly proud of them all'

Headteacher Rob Higgins commented: "We are absolutely delighted by the results our pupils have achieved. Results may have been calculated differently this year, but they reflect the hard work, effort and commitment of pupils, their families and staff.

"We are incredibly proud of them all. Proud of the results they have achieved, the resilience and positivity they have shown throughout an incredibly challenging few months and proud of the young adults they have become.

"It has been a pleasure to enrol so many of our Year 11 pupils into our Sixth Form to continue their education with us next year. We also wish those pupils who are pursing different routes the best of luck for the future.

"We can’t wait to welcome them and all other year groups back to school in September."
