Avro begin season with defeat to Longridge Town

North West Counties Premier Division Avro 1-2 Longridge Town

Avro began their first season in the North West Counties Premier Division with a 2-1 defeat to Longridge Town at the Vestacare Stadium.

It was a momentous occasion for the club, with James Hampson and Lee O'Brien's side making their debut in step five after securing back-to-back promotions.

A crowd of 192 attended the game and saw Avro take the lead in the early stages of the second half through Mike Shenton. The hosts had further opportunities to extend their lead but were profligate in front of goal. And they were made to pay for their wastefulness, as Paul Turner levelled matters for the visitors in the 55th minute, before Sam Maddox gave them the lead ten minutes later.

Avro were unable to find a way back into the game and the visitors held out for the three points.

Following the game, joint-manager Hampson gave his assessment on the defeat.“The first half was very even with chances for both teams. After the break we scored early and had two/three glorious chances to put the game out of sight, missing from two yards out.

"We then got punished and they scored a very good goal. We knew Longridge would be a very fit, well-drilled team like all Ashley’s teams are. It just wasn’t our day today. However it’s a good early lesson for how we need to be successful in the Premier Division.”

Avro return to league action on Wednesday evening with a home clash against Padiham, before the club make their FA Cup debut against Litherland REMYCA on Saturday.

In other news, last season's top scorer, Joe Bevan, has suffered another injury. The striker had only just been given the all clear ahead of the game but suffered another set back on Saturday.
