Work starts on new play area in Whitfield

Work on a £90,000 project to install new play equipment in Whitfield has started this week.

High Peak Borough Council worked with Whitfield community groups on designs for the new improved play area and playground specialists HAGS were chosen to carry out the scheme.

Contractors are now able to work at the Recreation Ground site - known locally as the Rec - as the coronavirus lockdown restrictions continue to gradually ease.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: “It’s great news that we’re now able to get started on installing this new play equipment which will offer the local community a much improved facility.

“The value of being active, moving more and enjoying being outdoors has really come to the fore during recent months as we’ve all had to adapt to changed routines so our investment couldn’t come at a better time.

“Projects like this are a key part of how we’re working with communities to create a happy and healthier High Peak. I’m delighted that our co-operative approach with the People of Whitfield and Whitfield Hive community groups has resulted in a scheme which has taken full account of the views of local people and will meet local needs and which, I’m certain, people will enjoy for years and years to come.”

What part of the play area looks like now

Whitfield resident Claire Hennessy added: “I am delighted that work is now starting on the new play area. It will have a huge impact on our community and benefit so many people’s well-being – both physically and mentally. A most welcome and positive boost for us all.”

The work is expected to take up to six weeks.
