Women 'strike' in Glossop in demand for climate change action

Women in Glossopdale joined others across the world in protest to demand action on the climate crisis and will be continuing to display their message on a weekly basis.

As was the case last week for the first 'strike', the Glossop women's climate strike will be on High Street West, close to Tesco petrol station, every Friday morning from 8am to 10am "until our demands are met for a cleaner, greener Glossop and world".

The group are inviting all women to join in and accompanied children are also welcome.

A spokesperson for Glossop Women's Climate Strike's said: "In every crisis, it is overwhelmingly women who pick up the pieces, both in the UK and in most of the world. The climate crisis is/will be no different. Unlike with Covid-19, there is no vaccination against climate catastrophe.

"There are extreme floods and fires in Greece, Turkey, Russia, Albania, the USA, Germany, and Japan. These events are getting more frequent and closer to home, and they are caused by human actions.

"Glossop is a valley, and therefore at much more risk of severe flooding in future – so, this crisis will eventually arrive on our doorsteps. The UK is kept warm by the gulf stream, which is disappearing, giving us even more cause to worry about our future and that of our children and grandchildren."
