Blizzards blasted Glossop and the rest of the High Peak as the first snow of the winter closed roads and bought chaos.
Light falls early last Friday morning (4 December) gave no indication of what lay ahead as by mid-day a huge belt of snow had swept in.
Police quickly closed the Snake Pass from the top of Sheffield Road to Ladybower Reservoir and the Woodhead Pass soon followed.
Derbyshire County Council gritters had been out to grit and clear roads, but long queues of traffic built up on roads in and out of Glossopdale and Longdendale.
Police cars blocked one side of the A57 outside Glossop’s Royal Oak pub to deter drivers from taking on the cross-Pennine route and officers stood by offering advice on alternative ways into Yorkshire.
Before police left they put up road closed signs and strung a barrier across the road - which was closed until Saturday - to prevent drivers from risking the route.
Drivers who were on the pass when the blizzards began struggled to get down into Glossop from Snake Summit and there was a stream of slow moving vehicles on Sheffield Road.
There were some people however who welcomed the early signs of winter, with dog walkers heading across Pyegrove Fields for the snow covered Shire Hill Woods.
