Why bomb disposal unit was called to a Glossop street

Police and bomb disposal experts were scrambled to a Glossop street after a suspicious device was found at a house. 

Officers and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team were called to Longclough Drive at around 3pm on Thursday afternoon (6 May). 

They were responding to a report that a device had been found in a property whilst items were being sorted. 

They were at the scene for several hours until late in the evening. 

Glossop Police Safer Neighbourhood Team confirmed on Friday morning (7 May) that the device was a decommissioned hand grenade which posed no threat to the public.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary said the bomb disposal unit were called as it was unclear if the device was live, but it was found not to be following an inspection. 

They said: "Officers were called to reports that a device, believed to be a mortar, had been found at a house in Longclough Drive in Simmondley at 3pm on 6 May.

"The Explosive Ordnance Division were called to assist due to it be unclear if the device was live.

"Once they arrived and inspected the device it was found not be live."
