Tameside Magistrates' Court in Ashton.

A burglary charge, a jail threat for an assault on a police officer and a driver above the legal drug drive limit are among the recent cases heard at Tameside Magistrates' Court.

Here's our latest round-up...

Jail threat for kicking officer

Tameside magistrates have given Stefan Howse a suspended prison sentence for assault and causing criminal damage to a vehicle.

The court heard the charges related to incidents on February 15 in Ashton.

Windows to a vehicle were smashed with £500 damage caused, while the 26-year-old, of Margaret Street, Ashton, also admitted assaulting a police officer.

He also admitted a third charge of being threatening and abusive.

The court found the assault religiously aggravated and heard he had kicked the officer.

Magistrates gave him a 12 weeks prison term, suspended for 12 months, plus ordered him to pay £500 compensation for the damage caused and a further £200 compensation for the assault.

100 hours work for harassment

Tameside magistrates have ordered Ryan Diveney to carry out 100 hours unpaid work for harassment.

The 27-year-old, of Castle Street, Stalybridge, was convicted at West Yorkshire Magistrates’ Court for the offence which had happened between June and August last year in Huddersfield.

Appearing before Tameside magistrates for sentence, the court heard the incident was racially and religiously aggravated.

He was given a restraining order, meaning he must have no contact with the complainant.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Over the limit

A driver who was found to be over the drug drive limit as he motored through Glossop has been banned from the road for three years.

Nathan Jones, 27, was stopped on Chapel Street in the town on November 21 last year and found to be over the legal drug drive limit.

He pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Stockport magistrates and was fined £154, plus must pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.

His address was given as Derwent Drive, Kearsley.

Burglary charges

A 29-year-old man from Dukinfield has been charged with burglary and two attempted burglaries at premises in Ashton town centre.

The incidents happened last Thursday.

Nyle Gallagher, of Victoria Road, was arrested and remanded in police custody to appear before magistrates on Friday and was bailed to appear before the court again on May 27.

Man jailed for assaulting police officers

A Glossop man has been jailed for three months for assaulting two police officers.

Brett Beresford, 25, of Highfield Road, had initially denied the two offences but later changed his plea to one of guilty.

Stockport magistrates heard the charges related to an incident in Charlesworth back on November 2, 2019.

Magistrates jailed him for what they called a ‘deliberate attack on public servants carrying out their duty’.

He was ordered to pay a total of £300 compensation.

120 hours of unpaid work

Stockport magistrates have ordered Gamesley man Shane Hallas to carry out 120 hours unpaid work.

The 39-year-old, of Bakewell Gardens, pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting two police constables on two separate occasions.

The first incident had happened in March last year and the next on April 19.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £200 compensation, plus pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Disqualified for three years

Hadfield driver Ryan Leigh has been banned from the road for three years for being over the drug drive limit.

The 26-year-old, of Greenbank, Hadfield, was stopped on Dinting Vale in Dinting on November 20.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £100 at Stockport Magistrates’ Court.

He was also fined £100 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Pay for damages

Stephen Skinner had denied causing damage to a taxi but changed his plea to guilty.

Tameside magistrates heard the offence had happened back on February 20, 2019, and the damage caused was around £100-£200.

The 42-year-old, of Sands Walk, Hattersley, did admit a charge of being threatening and abusive on the same date. He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £209.60 compensation.
