Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

For the second successive weekend rain was generally the winner, although some games did get finished by use of the Duckworth Lewis calculations.

Rain arrived about an hour and a half into the afternoon’s schedule, and put paid to many matches but took around 3 hours out for those games which did manage to finish.  The feature was a win for Denton St Lawrence which saw them widen the gap at the top of the Premier Division.

Premier Division

The only game in the Premier Division which saw a result was at Sycamore Park where Denton SL stole a march on their rivals at the top of the table.  The rain arrived after Clifton had moved to 64-5 after 20 overs, and came almost immediately after Scott Kirwin had struck twice in 2 balls, and it left DSL on top.  A break of nearly 3 hours left the game restricted to 30 overs a side, during which time Clifton inched to 105-9, (Matt Sonczak 3-29).  More rain left DSL with a target of 76 off 20 overs, following a Duckworth Lewis calculation.  The DSL chase saw the early departure of Mark Dilnutt, but possibly with an eye on the weather pro Neil Hornbuckle, (36*), and Kirwin, (39*), wasted no time as they took only 11 overs to get the winning points.  It leaves DSL with a healthy 13 point lead over Flixton, Woodbank and Greenfield, as the season approaches the half way point.  Elsewhere the only play possible was at Prestwich who reached 46-2 against Flixton before the weather had its say.

Monton v Greenfield (Aban); Prestwich 46-2 v Flixton (Aban) ; Roe Green v Egerton (Aban); Royton v Stand (Aban); Denton SL 77-1 (won DL) Clifton 105-9; Woodhouses 44-1 v Woodbank (Aban)

Division 1A

All the local teams got into action, but the only conclusive outcome was at Moorside, who dismissed Denton for 56, and then took less than 4 overs to reach a DL target of 34.  It was Denton’s third loss in a row in completed games and after a promising start they have fallen away recently.  The only other game that even remotely approached a conclusion was at Denton West where a rain interrupted Unsworth innings ended on 133-9 after 38 overs.  The Denton West chase had reached 48-2 off 7 overs when the umpires deemed conditions unfit and that was the end of play.  Glossop looked to be on the verge of chasing a big total as Brooksbottom reached 156-3 after 35 overs before the elements had their say and there was even less action at Glodwick, in the battle of the top two, as Flowery Field had inched their way to 44-4 off 20 overs.

Denton West 48-2 Unsworth 133-9 (Aban); Glossop v Brooksbottom 156-3 (Aban); Heywood v Uppermill 70-1 (Aban); Swinton Moorside v Austerlands (Aban); Glodwick v Flowery Field 44-4 (Aban) ; Moorside 34-1 (won DL)  Denton 56ao

Division 1B

There was only one completed game and this was largely down to the demolition of the Dukinfield batting by leaders Heyside. They managed a paltry 31, in an innings which lasted 19 overs, and despite a lengthy rain break, Heyside were never going to need much time and so it proved.  A DL target of 29 occupied them for 19 balls.  The only other play in the Division was at Westleigh, and even then not for very long.  Effectively there has been no real move in the tables for a fortnight now, after a virtual washout for two consecutive weekends.

Edgworth v Astley & Tyldesley (Aban); Greenmount v Droylsden (Aban); Walshaw v Bury (Aban); Westleigh 24-0 v Whalley Range (Aban); Heyside 29-0 (won DL) Dukinfield 31ao; Stayley v Thornham (Aban)

Division 2A

All 6 games were unfinished, with 2 of them not starting.  The game at Micklehurst saw visitors Winton total 151-8 amidst the rain interruptions, (Stuart Chamley 3-41), but Jonny Forrester’s team were unable to start on their reply.  Micklehurst stand 3rdin the table and have had an impressive season so far and look well placed to push for promotion.  This Saturday they will be looking for their 6thwin of the campaign when they face Roe Green 2ndXI.

Bury 2ndXI v Glossop 2ndXI (Aban); East Lancs PM v Elton Vale (Aban); Littleborough Lakeside v Prestwich 2ndXI 75-1 (Aban); Micklehurst v Winton 151-8 (Aban); Shaw 9-0 Elton 59-8 (Aban); Werneth v Roe Green 2ndXI 68-1 (Aban)

Division 2B

Ashton were in a strong position having reduced Greenfield 2ndXI to 119-9 before the rain came but are still looking to build on only a single victory so far.  They will certainly be hoping for this when they welcome fellow strugglers Tottington to Rayner Lane this weekend.  Friarmere took top spot as they beat the then leaders SW Manchester by 22 runs, and in the only other completed game Wythenshawe beat Denton West 2ndXI for a 2ndwin.

SW Manchester 110ao Friarmere 132-9; Stretford 94-5 Edenfield 120-0 (Won DL);  Whalley Range v Deane & Derby (Aban); Wythenshawe 176ao Denton West 2ndXI 131ao; Greenfield 2ndXI 119-9 v Ashton (Aban); Oldham v Tottington St Johns 113-7 (Aban)
