Waste transfer station in Glossop due to be demolished

Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre will open later than usual on Friday (26 February) to allow demolition work to take place on the site next to the centre.

The Derbyshire County Council-run recycling centre, on Melandra Road, is expected to open to the public at midday on Friday and will close at the usual time of 6pm.

Demolition work will take place at the waste transfer station, which is a large building where refuse trucks take waste collected from households to be bulked up and collected by contractors to be taken for treatment and disposal.

A decision to stop using the building was taken last year after it was found to be "structurally unsafe and beyond economic repair".

Changes had already been made to the layout of the recycling centre to keep employees and the public safely away from the waste transfer station, but the county council say the recycling centre must close to the public for a few hours on Friday to ensure their safety while some of the demolition work goes ahead.

The borough council is taking all household waste to the county council’s other transfer station in Buxton so collections from residents are unaffected.

We reported last week how the county council will be spending £3.2 million on a two-phase redevelopment of Glossop's centre, after it was approved by councillors at a Budget setting meeting.

While all of the county council’s recycling centres have continued to operate during the pandemic, users are reminded to follow government guidance on travel and advice to stay at home except where necessary.
