Walking the Peaks for pennies

Glossop-based Powsers Mountaineering Club spent a blustery July day walking more than 30k for Reuben’s Retreat.

They followed two sections of the newly created Peak District Boundary Walk from Peak Forest, which conveniently brought them back to the Bull’s Head in Old Glossop for a well-earned pint.

At a recent club meeting at the pub, the proceeds were presented to Reuben’s Retreat founder, Nicola Graham.

Powsers’ John Hughes said: “Including Gift Aid, this year the Powsers have raised well over £2,500 for this tremendous local charity.

“This was our 36th annual charity walk. We’ve sponsored many excellent locally-based charities over the years and we’re particularly proud to be supporting Reuben’s Retreat for the third year running.

“The work Nicola and her team do is absolutely brilliant. It’s such a wonderful, unique and heart-warming charity that so far has helped over 800 families.”

John added: “Their major refurbishment project is coming along in leaps and bounds and our members had no hesitation in nominating  Reuben’s as our charity partner again this year.

“A huge thanks to everyone who helped organise, took part and sponsored us for the event. The Powsers are out on the hills every Sunday and we have holidays in UK mountain regions and on the Continent.

“We welcome new members - to find out more about our activities visit the The Powsers on Facebook or email us at thepowsers@gmail.com.

“More funding is required to continue supporting families and deliver the next phases of this tremendous ongoing project to create a sanctuary that will be a home-from-home to provide respite breaks for families dealing with the serious illness of a child.”
