Volunteers needed for wildflower garden in Glossop

Volunteers are being recruited to help care for a community garden that has been created in a Glossop park.

Three local people – Mike, Sarah, and Richard – have worked hard to create a community garden for local people and visitors to the town to enjoy.

The Garden, located in Harehills Park close to the Chapel Street entrance, was a wasteland before it was cleared and the soil was prepared for plants and wildflowers seeds.

A donation from a local councillor and Tesco’s provided a number of plants to the project and many local people have also donated plants and seeds.

The garden has enhanced the park and created something local people can enjoy and be proud of while providing increased habitats for insects, birds, and wildlife.

Mike said: “What would be welcomed is just a few more volunteers who can, over the next few months, help to clear the site of many of the weeds which have encroached around the planted flowers, and plant some new plants.

“We know that many weeds will reappear in the Spring, and in order to give a natural feel to the Garden we feel that certain plants can be allowed stay as long as they do not overwhelm the plants we have introduced.

“More volunteers might also help us to gradually extend the area of the Garden so that more flowering plants can be put in.”

The group would like to encourage and welcome people to just come and give it a try. No previous knowledge of gardening is necessary.

Just an hour or two once a week or less frequently would provide a boost to their efforts.
