Trainee firefighters' marathon effort to raise charity cash

Putting their skills to the test on Saturday (22 May) will be Derbyshire's newest trainee firefighters, as they take on a hose run marathon to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

The latest trainees from Wholetime Trainee Course 110 will be rolling out, and rolling up, a 70mm Fire Hose to cover the same distance of a marathon - 1,680 lengths in total.

They aim to raise £1,000 for the charity, which offers specialist lifelong health and wellbeing support for all Fire Service employees across the UK.

It's a long-standing tradition for new firefighters to mark the end of their initial training course with a charity event and, after an uncertain year due to Covid restrictions, Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Gavin Tomlinson is delighted to see its return.

“The Fire Fighters Charity is always there to support fire and rescue employees and their families when we may need them most, so holding these events is our way of saying thank you and supporting the charity ourselves," he said.

“I’d like to wish all of the trainees from Course 110 all the best with the event which will be a physical and mental challenge, and hope they exceed their fundraising target.”

To support their fundraising efforts, a JustGiving page has been set up at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/wds110hosemarathon
