Thefts from vans in High Peak could be connected to suspicious mopeds

Police are investigating whether the sightings of people riding suspicious mopeds could be linked to tools being stolen from vans in the High Peak.

Officers from Buxton Police Safer Neighbourhood Team say they are working with Greater Manchester Police to establish a plan to combat any cross-border criminal activity.

More thefts were reported in Chapel-en-le-Frith and New Mills on Friday evening (7 May).

Mopeds have been seen being driven in the area without a vehicle registration mark (VRM) and acting "very suspiciously". They were recently seen again in Chinley (pictured).

Buxton Police SNT are urging residents to be vigilant and report any mopeds in the area.

They said: "Make sure that your vehicles, outbuildings, and homes are secure, and if possible, keep anything expensive or sentimental out of sight or kept in the house.

"We know this is not always possible, especially with work vans etc. But we want to make it as difficult as possible for these opportunists!

"We have also been made aware of mopeds being driven, showing no VRM’s and acting very suspiciously. They were sighted again in Chinley recently.

"These mopeds seem to appear shortly before we have the theft from vehicles/sheds. Whether they are connected or not we are not certain, but they need stopping!

"If these mopeds are seen in the area, please report it straight away to us on 999. This way we can get officers to them asap.

"Please double check your home security systems, alarms, CCTV etc to make sure it is all working properly and covering your property."

Suspicious activity and crimes should be reported by calling 101 in a non-emergency and 999 in an emergency.
