The inspiration behind Glossop author's first children's book

A Glossop writer has released her first children's book – inspired by her own family.

The self-published book called Violet and Ruby Play Hide and Seek on the Moon has been written by Katharine Jones.

The wonderfully illustrated bright and colourful book is aimed at young children aged around three and upwards.

Kat said: “I had the story in my head and knew what I wanted it to look like so, when the illustrator started creating the pictures, it was so nice to see what was in my head come alive on paper.”

Since school she has written poems and songs, but it was having her own children that inspired her to start writing children’s books after seeing how much her five-year-old twin girls enjoyed books and stories.

“They have always enjoyed me reading to them which I started doing when they were babies and they also come up with fun ideas for their own stories.

“The characters in this story are based on my own twin girls, the names my daughter came up with, she particularly liked the name Violet and asked why she wasn’t called that.

“She went through a phase of calling all her dolls and teddies Violet and then Ruby followed shortly after.”

As most children love to play hide and seek, Kat thought it would be cool if a child could go anywhere they wanted to go - just by playing hide and seek.

“Children often come out with ideas that are out of this world or not what an adult may think as they have brilliant imaginations so writing this story I thought, why couldn’t they be on the moon so I decided to write about that," she said.

“I wanted to make it fun and exciting, I knew I wanted it to be a picture book and I didn’t want it to be too long as my children when they were younger would only concentrate for a certain amount of time.”

Copies of Violet and Ruby Play Hide and Seek on the Moon are available for £4 by contacting Kat via email at katmandouk@hotmail.co.uk or by texting or phoning on 07733 719757.

Kat has already written the next adventure for Violet and Ruby and has other stories she hopes to bring to life.
