Support on offer to support safer gambling

Safer Gambling Week is running from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 November and Derbyshire County Council will be sharing advice and support for anyone impacted by gambling.

Safer Gambling Week aims to normalise conversations around gambling-related harm and to raise awareness of support services for anyone struggling with gambling problems.

It’s a national campaign led by treatment providers, voluntary organisations and the gambling industry, that aims to raise awareness of:

  • How to identify if gambling is becoming an issue and how to seek help
  • Tips and tools that are available to help people control their gambling habits and ensure that they know their limits
  • Sources of more advice and support.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for health and Communities, Councillor Carol Hart, said: “Around 2.7 per cent of adults in Great Britain, or nearly 1.4 million people, currently live with a gambling addiction.

“On average, for each person who has a gambling addiction, between six to 10 other people are directly or indirectly affected by their gambling activity.

“This means across Derbyshire, lots of people, families, friendship groups and communities can experience problems related to the impacts of gambling problems.

“But there is advice and support on hand to help and we’ll be sharing information and signposting to local help.”

As part of Derbyshire’s Safer Gambling Week, the county council will be sharing information online and sharing resources with local services such as libraries and supermarkets.

Derbyshire County Council’s website has information about what to do if you, or a family member, is struggling with gambling problems which can be accessed here: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/gamblingsupport
