Street sign tribute to Tintwistle soldier

A Glossopdale soldier will be forever remembered after a new street was named in his honour.

The new Barratt Homes development in Tintwistle features Lance Corporal Steven Bagshaw Avenue.

Although the street sign has been in place for a while, it was formally dedicated to Steven on Saturday (13 November) to tie in with Remembrance services in the village.

His sister Mary Bagshaw told the Chronicle: “It is a fabulous memorial to him and for anybody who knew Steven - it is just amazing.”

The location of the new development also has special meaning to the family.

“It was very fitting because when he was a young lad he used to fish in the local river where the housing estate is," Mary said.

Mary, who gave a speech at the unveiling, was joined by her sister Sylvia Fernihough and their families. Their brother Anthony, who lives in Cumbria, was unable to attend due to ill health.

“He had lots of friends in the Cheshire Regiment, and I couldn’t believe how many turned up on Saturday.”

Among those who attended were members of the 22nd Cheshire Regiment Riders, a charitable motorbike group. Last year, they raised money for a plaque in memory of Steven in the National Arboretum.

Mary and the family would like to thank all those who attended the street name unveiling.

“I think if Steven was looking down on us, he would have been quite chuffed," she said.

Steven was 21 when he was killed while on active service in Northern Ireland in 1982.

He died, along with 10 soldiers and six civilians, in a pub bombing in Ballykelly.
