Students at St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy in Glossop have been learning vital skills which could help to save lives. 

Firefighters from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and paramedic teams in Glossop visited the Sunlaws Street school on Friday (15 October) to provide all 591 pupils with ‘Restart a Heart’ training. 

Students stepped up to learn CPR on Restart a Heart Day and each received a certificate. 

It was also non-uniform day at school, with students wearing red clothing and donating £1. The school aimed to raise £795 to help purchase a defibrillator to be based in Glossop.

Around 80 per cent of cardiac arrests happen at home, and with people spending more time at home throughout the coronavirus pandemic, statistics might be even higher. 

Also, survival rates from cardiac arrests outside of hospital are around one in 10, so the workshop could potentially be the difference between life and death.
