Skinflint Rally raises vital funds for Glossop Age Concern

Glossop’s Age Concern will be given a vital boost with over £2,000 raised so far by the efforts of two friends from Glossop Round Table – with further pledges still being made.

Nathan Dearn and Simon Capp took on the challenge of Coventry Round Table's Coast to Coast Skinflint Rally 2021 last weekend.

Nathan said: “The first rules you have it that you have to acquire a car shouldn’t spend more than £500 on it and it has to be road worthy and have a MOT.”

The pair were fortunate enough to be donated two cars a few weeks before the rally and while one was not up for the challenge the Ford Focus, after some minor work, good to go.

An eye-catching paint job that included superheroes and lots of fluorescent paint meant the duo couldn’t be missed.

“We were extremely noticeable,” said Nathan, “We weren’t getting lost.”

The route took them from Whitehaven to Newcastle via the North Coast 500, with Nathan and Simon sharing the driving between them.

“The scenery was stunning on the West coast of Scotland,” said Nathan but the route on the North coast was not without its challenges. “It was very foggy, and you could only see a few feet in front of you and on single track roads with passing places it was very stressful.”

The journey took in Ullapool, John O’Groats, and Inverness before finishing back over the border. “The car made it to Newcastle in one piece but when we went to drive home the following morning the clutch went,” said Nathan.

The rally isn’t a race and points are instead awarded to all the teams taking part for tasks they do on the way round. The Glossop Supergrass team came third overall out of 27 teams taking part.
