Shedding light on popular Tintwistle path

A campaign has been launched for the installation of street lights on a well-used path in Tintwistle.

The Cinder Path runs from West Drive to New Road and is used by locals to walk to Hadfield. It cuts several minutes off the journey, but at night the route is dark and uneven.

Local resident Sara Scott-Rivers has begun an online petition calling for improvements to the path.

She said: “It’s a very well used shortcut and it encourages people to walk rather than drive. It’s a key route for villagers. The path is ok in the summer, but now we are nearing the clocks going back it won’t be safe after 5pm. I feel it is dangerous, but I don’t think it would take much to improve safety along the route.”

Sara has now launched an online petition to campaign for street lights.

She said: “The path isn’t owned by anyone. It’s unadopted land. As a result, I’ve been told the responsibility falls to Derbyshire County Council to maintain it.

“I’m trying to get as many people as possible to sign my petition and find out if anyone has been the victim of crime down there.

“The path is used throughout the day by commuters, schoolchildren and parents with prams, and pedestrians and cyclists. However, there is no lighting, and the path surface is uneven and patchy. I would like DCC to install lighting along the route, and improve the path itself, at present it is dangerous and uneven in places.

“The clocks change in a few weeks, which means this path will be pitch black by late afternoon. The combination of the lack of lighting and irregular surface means it is not safe for people after dark.”

A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said: “We haven’t received any complaints about the lack of street lighting, but we’re aware of concerns about the condition of the footpath and will carry out an inspection to find out what repairs, if any, are needed.”
