Reliving the Nativity story in Charlesworth

Charlesworth children were told the Christmas story while a donkey called Romance quietly munched on a bale of hay in a manger, as Three Wise Men looked on.

It was the morning of the village’s annual Nativity Walk organised as usual by Kathy Holmes, with her friends taking on the roles of all the Christmas characters.

Kathy was determined that the festive story would be told despite Covid-19 and although the pandemic  meant that certain restrictions had to be met, she told it.

Kathy said: “We have had the Nativity Walk in the snow before, I was determined it would go on.”

The walk began in the churchyard of St John’s, with Kathy relating the story in front of a Nativity tableau to children from the nearby Springfield Day Nursery.

Then it was off for a walk through the village, shorter than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic, which meant that this year there was no stop at the inn where Mary and Joseph could be turned away.

The walk continued across busy Long Lane as drivers patiently waited, to a field at the side of the village school and a stable, created by Kath’s daughter Paula-Jayne.

Waiting to hear the Christmas story were pupils who looked on as Kathy narrated the Nativity tale, as the Wise Men, shepherds and an angel emerged and grouped around the manger as Jesus was born.

In one of the worst year that anyone can remember, young and old had celebrated the true meaning of Christmas and everyone was happy.
