Raising Poppy Appeal cash

Glossop Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal organiser Cllr George Wharmby would love to pass the record amount of money raised through sales last year.

He knows it will be difficult to top the £32,000 donated when people dug deep to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

But Cllr Wharmby is quietly confident of another good response.

He has been speaking to poppy sellers who report people ‘stuffing’ £10 notes into collecting cans.

Commenting in last year’s £32,000, Cllr Wharmby said: “It’s almost £1 for every member of the (Glossop) population.”
