Poppy Appeal well supported in Glossop so far

This year's poppy sales in Glossop are reported to be doing well.

There are volunteers selling them in Tesco, Aldi and M&S.

Councillor George Wharmby organises the collection each year for the Royal British Legion.

He told us: "We have chip and pin cards this year which makes it so much easier to contribute.

"Quite a few volunteers have come forward, however some of the older ones have been reluctant to help out because they don’t want to put themselves at risk of catching Covid. That’s perfectly understandable, but we would love to see some younger volunteers come forward.”

This year the parade is back on Remembrance Sunday, then there will be a gathering at the Cenotaph in Norfolk Square.

George added: “This year alternatives to paper poppies seem to be popular. The paper ones always sell well, but now we’re seeing an increase in sale of glow in the dark poppies, which are included in the boxes we send out to schools. So far this year, we’ve gone through around 6,000 paper poppies as well as the other types that are on sale.”

Boxes have also been sent out to local shops and pubs.

George said: "This year the Army Cadets collected for us last weekend and they did a great job. I’d also like to thank the people of Glossop who have crocheted poppies for us. They’ve been selling really well.”

Poppies are on sale until Remembrance Sunday. The following week the proceeds will be counted and the total for Glossop will be known.
