Plenty of pedal power for Simmondley schoolgirl

A schoolgirl is getting on her bike to raise cash for charity.

Nine-year-old Scarlett Chenery (pictured) is putting in the miles for mental health charity, Mind, by cycling 250 miles.

Her ambitious plan was to raise £250, but Scarlett, who is currently nearing the halfway mark of her ride at 104 miles, has already raised more than £1,450 and the number keeps climbing.

Scarlett lives in Simmondley and cycles 5-10 miles most nights with her dad.

On weekdays she uses local trails towards Charlesworth, while on weekends she travels further afield to Longdendale and Derbyshire. In the future she plans to do the Monsal trail and a route from Marple to Macclesfield.

Scarlett, who goes to Simmondley Primary School, says her inspiration for this campaign came from discussions about the importance of mental health and the challenges of lockdown.

She said: “The virus has really affected people with mental health problems and so I wanted to do something to help.

“Two hundred and fifty miles is a long way for my little legs - but I know I can do this, and I hope I can raise some money for this charity!

“I will be doing between 5-10 miles every time I can get out - which should be most days (even in the rain).”

Scarlett’s mum, Anna, said: “Scarlett set off wanting to raise an ambitious £250 for 250 miles on her bike in aid of Mind because we discussed the importance of mental health and she knows it’s been a very challenging time for lots of people during Covid restrictions.”
