Plans submitted for new McDonald's in Glossop

What the McDonald's restaurant could look like, according to the plans.

Plans for a new McDonald's restaurant in Glossop have been submitted and are dividing local opinion.

The fast-food giant wants to demolish the existing buildings at the former Wren's Nest pub site and replace it with a McDonald's restaurant with a drive-thru, creating 65 new jobs - 30 full time and 35 part time roles.

The former public house on Glossop Brook Road had car parking for 46 vehicles, and the application now available to view on High Peak Borough Council's website shows the new development would have parking for 32 vehicles.

Hundreds of comments have been made on the application, with many being made via a McDonald's link to support the plans, although it is unclear where the people are from.

However, concerns have been raised that the development could cause even more traffic problems on High Street West and create further congestion.

In the firm’s own transport assessment, the new restaurant and drive-thru is forecast to generate some 193 and 213 two‐way vehicle trips during the Friday and Saturday peak hours.

The assessment states that this would result in only 13 per cent and 16 per cent additional traffic as most would be people passing by anyway or shared trips with the adjacent Tesco store.

The firm says the proposals provide the opportunity for McDonald's to meet a long-standing requirement for a restaurant to serve this catchment area, to meet customer demand and introduce additional choice in the market.

Public consultation is open until 2 February.
