Nostalgia: Villagers still waiting for new rail station

We have finally discovered just how long Gamesley people have been waiting for a railway station - it's at least 80 years!

Way back in 1936 the London and North Eastern Railway Company Ltd had received a letter from Chapel-en-le-Frith Rural District Council requesting a station at Gamesley Bridge to serve the people of the villages of Gamesley, Charlesworth and Chisworth.

The request was turned down and it was 10 years later when the council applied again.

On each occasion it was because it was not thought that there were nearly enough people in the three villages to justify building one.

The company, known as LNER, also said at the time that there appeared to be no major housing developments planned for the area to make a case for building a station or even a smaller version known as a ‘halt’.

Twenty years on Gamesley estate was built and more than 1,200 people moved into the brand new houses.

There was still no halt, although from the 1960s onwards a station has been promised and a series of MPs and local councillors have been fighting for one.

Hopefully the wait won’t be much longer.
