Glossop once had a thriving saw mill on Victoria Street, but it came close to destruction when a 30 gallon drum of paraffin exploded.
Luckily Glossop Fire Station was only a few hundred yards away on Ellison Street and Middleton’s works was saved.
The blast on a November afternoon in 1946 happened in the engine house, throwing burning paraffin over a wide area and sending workers scattering
Firefighters were there in minutes and managed to extinguish the blaze in around half an hour.
Thankfully no-one was hurt and Middleton Brothers soon got back to sawing wood.
