Nostalgia: Right royal gathering

Despite the rain, the Rose Queen Festival was a huge success and Glenis Hall was crowned Queen of Gamesley.

Gamesley Rose Queen Festivals used to take place every July and involved a procession led by Glossop Old Prize band from the town hall to the Glossop Road recreation ground.

They were also big fundraisers and in 1945 the organisers were hoping to bring in £230 to take the total collected in the previous four years to £1,000.

The money was for local charities and the Chronicle reported that every ‘able-bodied man and woman in Gamesley had worked as a team’ to achieve such a magnificent amount.

With the war over, hitting the four figures seemed certain, but the rains came, the procession was cancelled and the only parade was twice round Brookfield School which was pressed into service for the crowning ceremony.

It was still a glittering occasion however for rose queen elect Glenis Hall, 10, retiring queen Shirley Elliott and their retinues.

The day got even better when the rain stopped, the sun came out and everyone made their way to the Glossop Road ‘Rec’ where a huge marquee had been hoisted.

It was the ideal place for an afternoon and evening of entertainment and a place to serve refreshments, while outside there were roundabouts, pony rides and a variety of running races for both children and adults.
