Nostalgia: Popular shows take to the stage

Most towns in the 1950s had a multi-use building and in Glossop it was Victoria Hall.

In those days few people had the luxury of a television set, so entertainment mostly meant the picture palace, pubs, coffee bars and youth clubs.

Glossop had them all and it also had ‘the Vic’.

The hall is still there, with an arts centre and a community use building on the ground floor that once housed Glossop Library.

The first floor is still out of bounds, waiting for the kind of cash to pay for a costly refurbishment to restore it to its former glory.

However, in the 1950s and ‘60s it staged events ranging from Glossop Grammar School speech days, talent shows, company dances, Christmas parties, charity nights and civic balls. On one night in the 1950s around 350 people packed in to the hall to watch an evening of professional wrestling.
