New circular walk around Glossop

The Glossop Circular Walk map.

Spring is in the air and what better way to enjoy the local area than by taking in a new walking route around Glossop.

The 13-mile Glossop Circular is designed in such a way people can just walk individual sections or do the whole route in one. It follows bridleways, public footpaths, tracks, and quiet country lanes.

It has been created by Mike Tomlinson who has also produced a website for people to use which also features photographs and information about the route.

“It all started with some fundraising for Glossop North End for training pitches up Cemetery Road. I designed a map of Glossop they could sell as fund raising,” he explained.

“Helen Thornhill from the Bureau in Glossop asked me to do something similar for them linking places in Glossop.

“I spent six months trying to work out a route using footpaths already established and country lanes that were already there.”

Easily accessible from Dinting, Gamesley, Hadfield, Old Glossop, Padfield, Shirebrook Park, Simmondley and Whitfield, it also has links to the Trans Pennine Trail, Longdendale Trail, and Doctor’s Gate.

Helen Thornhill, from Move More Glossop, said the initiative is looking at different ways to get people more active.

With walking becoming more popular since the pandemic she hopes people will enjoy walking along the Glossop Circular. “It is a great route.”

The walk, featured on the Go Jauntly App, roughly follows the boundary of the Peak District National Park, and takes in stunning views, open moorland, quite country lanes, and industrial heritage
