Man who drove 4x4 off snowy Snake Pass rescued

A man who drove his vehicle into a peat bog 80 metres off the Snake Pass was rescued by Glossop Mountain Rescue Team, as well as another man who had been stranded for over five hours.

The team's dedicated volunteers were called out by Derbyshire Police to assist with checking stranded vehicles after the heavy snowfall on the Woodhead Pass and the A57 section of the Snake Pass last Friday afternoon (4 December).

Team members carried out searches of vehicles that had been stranded on the snow covered routes, in addition to advising many drivers still attempting to navigate the closed road to turn around.

Among a few empty vehicles, rescuers found a 4x4 - the driver of which had accidentally driven off the road at the Snake Summit and sank deep into the peat bog, approximately 80 metres from the roadside, thinking it was the road.

GMRT also found a man in a vehicle where he had been stranded for more than five hours with no heating or sustenance.

All occupants were driven to safety and the team were stood down at 6.30pm.
