Local indie pop band release nostalgic new single

A thriving local indie pop band – featuring a talented lead singer from Glossop – have just released their latest single, which takes them back to their childhood.

Abi White, 23, who lives in Simmondley, is the vocalist and – together with Joe Myers, 19, who is from Marple, as well as 23-year-old twin brothers Ryan and Liam Croney – they make up Foxglove.

Considered one of the rising acts of Manchester’s music scene, the young four-piece band – which formed in September 2016 – have played a number of gigs at well-known venues around the country, their unique material has been played far and wide on some of the biggest radio stations, and they have received rave reviews.

Since November, they have been hard at work during successive lockdowns on their new single called Give It Up – which launched on Friday (26 February). You can watch the official music video at the top of the page.

Packed full of ‘90s inspired guitar melodies, the band describe the single as “an exhilarating nostalgic ballad about the vulnerability you feel when you’re ‘too deep’ into a situation to say what you truly want to”.

They add that inspirations from The La’s There She Goes and Country House by Blur are also woven into the track, combined with elements of pop inspiration from the likes of The 1975’s Me & You Together Song and Katy Perry’s Thinking Of You to "bring a hint of the current era".

Lead singer Abi said: “When we play this song live, it’s a vulnerable and emotive ballad that seems to stop people in their tracks. We really wanted to encapsulate this within the recording and weave in the nostalgia from the times we were all growing up in the late 90’s/ early 00’s.

"I remember singing Avril Lavigne songs in my bedroom, and I feel this song is a nod towards growing up and my childhood."

Lead guitarist Ryan added: “We are really re-living our childhood with this track. It’s everything we listened to on our mum’s cassette player when we were growing up."

Promising local indie pop band Foxglove

The story of how the band first got together is a rather unusual one.

"Around six years ago, I went to see my friend’s band in Manchester and supporting them was a band called Jester's Tear," Abi told us.

“I followed Jester's Tear and the members on Instagram and, probably 18 months later, I had a message from the guitarist, Ryan, who had asked about the photo I had posted of my guitar and if I sung as well.

“I ended up going for an audition and joining the band. We all collectively decided to call the band Foxglove. Around two years later, our old bassist left and we put out a call for a bassist to join us.

“We had a message from Joe saying he had seen us perform before and really like to have a sound and wondered if he could come for an audition and the rest was history!

“So I guess to sum it up, me and Joe both saw Foxglove without realising that we would be joining in the future!”

With their feet firmly planted into 2021’s indie pop scene, Foxglove have lots planned for the months ahead once the coronavirus lockdown restrictions have eased.

"We're really hoping that we're able to get back out playing live music and show our tracks to people in a live capacity," Abi added.

"Playing live really is our bread and butter and we're just itching to get back! We've got a lot more music on the way too that's ready!"
