It still looks a lot like Christmas in Chapel

Mark Thomas, owner of the Hanging Gate, surrounded by his winter wonderland.

As pubs and restaurants welcome customers indoors for the first time since November, one High Peak venue is providing a really festive celebration.

At the Hanging Gate on Manchester Road in Chapel, the team had just finished putting up their Christmas decorations last autumn when the rules changed and lockdown followed.

Owner Mark Thomas didn't want their three weeks of hard work to go to waste, so he decided to leave them up until they reopened - little knowing he wouldn't be welcoming people inside till May!

"We have 5,000 baubles, and around 30,000 lights," he told the Chronicle. "I was worried they would be all dusty and dirty but they are not.

"I was really pleased that all the lights still work."

To go along with the decorations, that will remain on display until the end of June, a festive menu is available running alongside their usual menu.

"My wife and mum and dad came in and said I should take them down as its May but I said no they are staying up."

Mark said: "I wanted to try and get busy doing something crazy - why not."

Each year, Mark tries to outdo the previous year with new themes and decorations and this year is no exception.

It may be later than planned but this is one Christmas spectacular that may prove to be worth the wait.
