In challenging conditions, members of the Dark Peak Model Aircraft Club saw their models take to the skies on Sunday as part of a world record attempt.

The event was part of celebrations to mark the centenary of the British Model Flying Association, of which they are members.

In total, 18 models were in the air at 12 noon in Birch Vale as the DPMAC joined clubs from up and down the country in the record attempt to get as many safely in the air at the same time.

Peter Lees, Chairman of the Dark Peak Model Aircraft Club, said: “It went absolutely brilliantly in spite of the terrible wind. It was ripping models out of our hands.

“A lot of model flyers wouldn’t normally have flown - it was that bad. It was only the fact it was a record attempt that we all decided we were going to go for it.”

He said it will be some time until they find out if the British Model Flying Association succeeded in breaking the world record. Around 280 Clubs throughout the UK registered for the event, however due to inclement weather some clubs were unable to take part.

Anyone who would like to find out more about the club should visit their website at www.dpmac.co.uk

Peter said: “We welcome all newcomers and can guide anyone on the right models to buy and have instructors to teach you how to fly, so complete novices are welcome, young or old.”
