High Peak candidate questions whether elections should have taken place

Should elections be taking place at the moment? That was the question posed by one of the candidates standing on the Derbyshire County Council elections.

With Covid restrictions still in place, it has been a very different election from previous years.

It has impacted on how people have campaigned and how people have voted with more people opting to use postal votes instead of going along to their polling station.

At the count itself, with attendance numbers limited, protective plastic screens around those counting the votes and social distancing in place there was a much more subdued atmosphere.

David Lomax (pictured), who stood for the Liberal Democrats in Whaley Bridge, said he felt the whole election should have been delayed until restrictions were lifted.

“It should not have been held at this time. They should have waited for the situation when we could go back to normal.”

He said: “It has been a none campaign basically. We have not been able to knock on doors like we would have. A lot were reluctant to deliver leaflets.”

It has not just been the County Council elections residents across the High Peak have been voting for.

They have also been voting for the next Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire. This election was due to take place last year but due to the pandemic was postponed until now.

In February, the government announced that elections would go ahead as planned as a result of extensive preparations being made.

They felt the rules they had put in place would minimize the risk of spreading coronavirus.
