Hayfield pupils are up for sporting challenge

What do you do as a school rich in sporting talent when most students are at home, and it's your scheduled Sports Week?

Why, you carry on – but virtually! That’s what Hayfield Primary School did.

Communicating virtually with their pupils, the school took ideas from the Youth Sport Trust and organised a daily schedule, with different sports each day.

Children could compete individually or as a family at home in challenges, and there were bonus house points for completing each challenge.

Pupils took part in athletics, target sports, mini-team sports, adventure sports in the garden and, lastly, ‘artistic sports’ – gymnastics, stunts and designing a new sport.

What started off with a few children taking part, soon spread as the scores started to come in.

Challenges were posted on social media daily and sent via email, and numbers taking part grew and grew, with recordings of achievements posted back.

The school now has videos of children undertaking real river walks, orienteering, roller-skating, football tricks and skills, trampolining, mountain biking, cycling, horse riding and lots more.

Headteacher Stefan Papadopoulos said: “The children really took to this idea. They were competitive and initiating.

“It’s been a great success, and we and parents have learned a lot.

“The school community, forced to be apart, really came together; it was lovely to see everyone’s enthusiasm.

“We’re already making a montage of the videos and photos parents have sent in, as a record of this amazing activity at this special time in the school’s life.”
