Green light for Derbyshire anti-speeding initiative

A scheme to address speeding in hot spots around Derbyshire is to be trialled after being given the green light by councillors.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet approved the use of speed indicator devices (SIDs) at a meeting yesterday (March 10) as part of a 12-month trial.

The SIDs are electronically activated signs that monitor the speed of vehicles and have been proven to reduce traffic speed in trouble areas.

Cabinet member for Highways, Councillor Kewal Singh Athwal, said: “In this proposed trial it is hoped it will assist in reducing the speeds in the county by reminding drivers if they are driving over the speed limit in any area.”

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has worked with the council on the scheme.

Speaking outside of the meeting, she said: “People across the county have told me time and time again that speeding is one of their main concerns and how it impacts on their communities.

“Many parish councils have been requesting these measures for a very long time to help tackle speeding in their communities.”

The trial is expected to get under way within the next six months.
