Glossop Push For Promotion

Glossop moved into the promotion places in GMCL Division One A with a convincing 59-run win against Uppermill at North Road.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, the hosts began positively with George Dyson (22) and David Wilde (26) adding 56 for the first wicket before both men fell in back-to-back overs.

Cameron Ball (21) steadied the ship with Alex Browne but, much like Wilde and Dyson, the former was dismissed after a promising start and Glossop were at 105-3 just past the halfway mark.

While a flurry of wickets fell through the middle order, Browne continued to score on his way to an important half-century for his side.

Although Browne was eventually dismissed for a hard-hitting 79 from just 70 balls, including three fours and six sixes, a quick-fire 14 from Rob Adderley ensured Glossop posted a competitive score.

As Glossop had done earlier in the day, Uppermill started brightly in their reply, scoring with relative ease on a flat track before Will Hargreaves (1-43) got the vital breakthrough, removing Jack Shaw for a run-a-ball 24.

Five overs later, a tidy piece of fielding from Adderley brought Paul Thompson’s innings to an end, run out for 17, but the visitors fought back and dominated.

Professional Ayaz Tasawar (43), fresh from an impressive bowling spell earlier in the day (3-35), formed what looked like could be a match-winning partnership with David Roberts (30), Uppermill cruising at 117-2 with 24 overs left.

However, as is so often the case, the game changed in the blink of an eye when both men fell in successive overs to Ball (2-32), sparking a dramatic collapse.

Adderley (3-13) picked up three wickets with some straight bowling, while Tom Nally (2-7) claimed two wickets of his own on his debut as Uppermill crumbled from 117-2 to 140-9.

With the last man unable to bat having sustained an injury earlier in the afternoon, Glossop sealed an important victory in the race for the top of the table.
