A new study has found that Glossop is the best market town to retire to in the UK.

Renowned as the gateway to the Peak District, Glossop has a significantly older population thanks to high quality of life it offers to elderly people.

Twenty per cent of residents are aged 65+, and the average life expectancy sits at 84 - higher than the UK average of 81.

The town offers average house prices of £239,000, good green spaces including Manor Park and Howard Park, and no less than 23 fish and chip shops in the area.

Glossop is second on the list, with Llandudno coming in at first in the top 10 towns - thanks to the elevated quality of life they offer to people aged 65 or more. It follows analysis of a range of cost, health and lifestyle factors.

Louise Yasities, Home Safety Expert at TakingCare Personal Alarms who carried out the survey, says: “As we get older, we find new things become more important to us. Moving somewhere that is not only a fantastic place to live but will also provide the services needed to look after you as you get older is crucial for the 65 plus age demographic.

“We’ve crunched the numbers to evaluate these considerations and have developed this list of the best places in the UK for people to retire to; from bingo halls to the number of care homes for every older person, we’ve left no stone unturned to find the best destinations for our older population.

“As average life expectancy increases, it’s more important than ever to empower older people to live happily and independently at home for as long as possible, and the data points we’ve analysed in this report address these.”
