Glossop church prepares for next phase of renovation

Repairs and redecoration are under way at Glossop's largest church and now thoughts are turning to the second phase of the improvements.

St Mary’s Crowned on Sumner Street is closed while contractors tackle work on the south aisle which will involve removing loose plaster, repairing cracks and painting.

The church is now gathering quotes for the second phase which will see the installation of toilet facilities and a cafe/social/meeting area.

The committee looking after the project is hoping the cost can be met by fund raising and grants.

Writing in his latest parish newsletter, Father Martin Sylvester thanked the committee for their ‘sterling work’ and all the ‘generous parishioners’ who have enabled a start to be made.

He said: “I have learned that many people who no longer live in Glossop have long-standing connections with St Mary’s.

“I feel it would be right to offer them the opportunity to contribute to the fund raising to pay for the work now in progress and the work in prospect.”
