A High Peak public house looks set to be demolished to make way for a new petrol station and drive-thru coffee shop.

An application to redevelop the site of the Fickle Mermaid, located just off the A6 in Chapel, is due to go before High Peak Borough Council’s Development Control committee on Monday (24 January).

If approved, the proposal would see stone from the former pub reused to build the new petrol station and convenience store and café for EG Group.

The application documents reveal that the firm has an agreement in place to purchase the site, subject to planning permission being granted.

Both businesses on the site off Foresters Way would be 24-hour operations and potentially create 45 new jobs.

A total of 53 representations have been made objecting to the plans on various grounds including traffic, fears it will not benefit the community as there are enough cafes and shops elsewhere and concerns over litter and noise.

Nine comments were made in support of the application welcoming the proposals.

Chapel Parish Council have raised concerns over increased traffic, the speed of traffic and light pollution.

The application to go before councillors is recommended for approval subject to conditions.

The meeting will be held at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton on Monday at 1.30pm.
