Excited youngsters enjoy summer of fun-filled activities

Summer 2021 has certainly been a hive of activity for youngsters in Gamesley and Whitfield.

Over 70 children attended regular sessions at Whitfield recreation area and Gamesley football pitch, enjoying hours of entertainment.

The activities - arranged by Helen Thornhill at Move More Glossop - were funded by the government's holiday activity fund and aimed at children who normally qualify for free school lunches.

A team effort was required to make it all happen.

Helen at Move More Glossop coordinated the project, applying for the funding and finding coaches from Glossop North End Juniors and Aim High Coaching.

High Peak Borough Council and Glossop North End Community Club provided the venues, while Kimberley Cakes produced the lunches and The Bureau in Glossop transported them to the venues.

Additionally, Buxton Water donated water bottles and High Peak Schools Sports Partnership also provided certificates and medals which they were presented with last Friday (3 September).

Helen said: "The sessions have been so popular - what started out as 12 children each session ended up with over 35 children attending each session. The buzz around the activities has been amazing. The children turning up early eager to start the sessions, asking when the next one is going to be and can we have more sessions. Parents stayed to watch the children enjoying playing, learning new skills, making new friends and enjoying the outdoor space on their doorstep every week."

"I'd also like to thank coach Cheryl Spilsbury who was an absolute star, going the extra mile to ensure the children had a great time."

The sessions in Gamesley were held on the football pitch on Melandra Castle Road, which Glossop North End Community Club kindly allowed them to use. Playing and training on a full-sized football pitch only added to the whole excitement for the youngsters.

Each session was composed of an hour of fun and games, learning to work as a team through team races and problems-solving games. The children then received their lunches before finishing with a 30-minute fun football match.

The feedback from parents couldn't have been more positive, reporting how much of a difference the activities have made to their children to learn new skills and how they have inspired their youngsters to join a football club and play more regularly.
