Compensation calls for business impacted by road closure

A petition has been launched in a bid to get compensation for businesses affected by road closures.

It has been prompted by the difficulties being faced by The Shady Oak Country Inn at Fernilee on the A5004 Long Hill Road between Whaley Bridge and Buxton.

The once busy route is now shut until September to allow essential work to take place to repair a landslip.

Although the business has lost around 80 per cent of its income, they are not entitled to any compensation, so a petition has been launched calling on the government to change the law.

Katie Scholes said on the change.org website: “After the past two years of little custom due to Covid when the road could have been repaired during these quiet months it now seems heart-breaking for the owners that they now face having no passing customers till at least September.

“Let's try to change the Government law on passing customers/trade so if your business is affected by a road closure which directly affects your income then you should be entitled to compensation.”

Hundreds of people have already given the petition their backing.
